Victoria Nicole Abbott (née Newman; formerly McNeil, Howard, Carlton, and Hellstrom) is a fictional character from the American soap opera The Young and the Restless. She was born on-screen on November 17, 1982[1] as the daughter of Victor Newman and Nikki Reed. The role was previously most notably portrayed by Heather Tom for over a decade, who earned outstanding reviews and praise for her portrayal, earning Daytime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Younger Actress In a Drama Series consecutively from 1993-2000, (over eight nominations) and one twice, in 1993 and 1999.[2] After Tom's departure in 2003, the role has been portrayed by actress Amelia Heinle since March 21, 2005.[3]
Victoria is the daughter of billionaire and show's leading male Victor Newman and Nikki Reed. Her history on the series has included romances with Cole Howard, Brad Carlton, J.T. As a child, the role was played by Ashley Nicole Millan from 1982 to 1990, and Jessica Jean Dollarhide did a voice-over in early 1991. Actress Heather Tom was the first actress to portray the role once the character's birth year is revised to 1971 in 1991. Tom was only 15 years old at the time she began to portray Victoria,[4] and just 16 years of age when she won her first ever Daytime Emmy award.[4] Tom left the show in April 1997 and the role was recast with Sarah Aldrich, who was let go briefly after her arrival, and in October, Tom was asked to reprise the role, which she did. Tom, who won two Daytime Emmy Awards for the role,[5] departed on December 17, 2003,[6] saying her departure was due to creative differences. When Tom departed from the role of Victoria, audiences and crew did not react happily, saddened by the loss of a central cast member.[7]
The producers spent a year looking for a recast, intending for the character to reappear onscreen in 2004, but the role was not recast until 2005.[8] Amelia Heinle who previously had roles on Loving and The City (as Steffi Brewster) and All My Children (as Mia Saunders) took over the role in March 2005.[9] When Heinle joined the cast, she said that she felt uncomfortable due to her taking over Heather Tom's role, and intimated at first[10] however has admitted to treating the show like home since.[11] In 2008, Heinle took a leave of absence due to her pregnancy, onscreen she slipped into a coma.[12] In 2011, it was speculated that Heinle was to leave The Young and the Restless, however it was confirmed on March 25, 2011 that she had managed to sign a new contract, stating "I’m happy here. The people are good here. I can’t believe I’ve been here for six years!"[13]
The character of Victoria is described as being a mixture of her parents, Victor and Nikki, having the tendency to be impulsive as her mother is with her relationships, and her father's headstrong state of mind.[14] She is well known for a relationships with various men such as Cole Howard (J. Eddie Peck), Brad Carlton (Don Diamont), J.T. Hellstrom (played by Thad Luckinbill, her real life husband) and most recently Billy Abbott (Billy Miller). The character's first major relationship was with Cole Howard, who left her for Ashley Abbott, a decade later she became involved with "the man shrouded in mystery" Brad Carlton,[15] and their marriage deteriorated once he had and affair with Sharon Newman (Sharon Case).
During her marriage to Brad, Victoria had already been emotionally involved with J.T. Hellstrom, and she married him after divorcing Brad. Thad Lukinbill was originally her cast member, and they married during their onscreen romatnic Storylines. They had a child, Reed Hellstrom. On the character's relationship, Heinle said ""I think they will stay together for a while before they wreck it. Look at how long I was with Brad! It went on for years almost, and that was not even a good, true love story. At least, I don’t think it was."[12] Heinle also stated that as Thad Luckinbill was her off screen husband in the real world, it may have contributed to the writers ending the relationship as they might not have had an onscreen spark due to the marriage with kids."[11] In 2010, J.T. was announced to exit, at that time she had already begun an attraction to Billy Abbott, and they had sex. Billy and Victoria later became an official couple rather then "Friends with Benefits", their families were extremely enraged, due to the longtime rivalry against the Abbotts and the Newmans. In particular, her father was extremely furious.[9] Billy had illegally presented Victoria with a child months into their marriage. Heinle said it was a good way to add conflict and drama to the show, saying "It (storyline) worked, and so they liked it and it spun off from there. So now we are stealing babies together!"[11] They have since stayed together.
When Nikki Newman became pregnant with Victoria, her paternity was in question on whether if she was fathered by Victor Newman or Nikki's then-husband, Kevin Bancroft. Kevin's mother, Alison Bancroft, who disliked Nikki, believed the child was Kevin's, and she set out to take custody from Nikki. She even hired Rick Daros to romance Nikki in order to pull both Kevin and Victoria from Nikki. Months later, it was learned that Victor was indeed Victoria's father. In 1990, Victoria was not happy about Nikki having married Jack Abbott, but he saved her life when she nearly drowned in the Newman Ranch pool. Afterward, Victoria continued acting out until Victor, without consulting Nikki, sent her off to boarding school in Switzerland.
In 1991, a teenaged Victoria returned from boarding school in Switzerland, determined to put an end to both Nikki and Victor's marriages to Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) and Ashley Abbott Newman (Eileen Davidson), respectively. She then began working in the mail room at Newman Enterprises, and she set her sights on the somewhat-older, Ryan McNeil (Scott Reeves). Victor, unhappy about his daughter's involvement with an older man, attempted to pay Ryan off to leave town. Ryan refused Victor's offer and eloped with Victoria. Their marriage did not last long, as Ryan left Victoria for Nina Chancellor (Tricia Cast).
After her divorce from Ryan, Victoria fell in love with Cole Howard (J. Eddie Peck). They eloped, but Victor was then forced to break some news to his daughter - Cole's mother, Eve Howard (Margaret Mason), told Victor that Cole was Victor's son. Believing they are brother and sister, Cole and Victoria annulled the marriage. Blood tests revealed that Cole was not actually Victor's son. He and Victoria then remarried. Eventually, Cole left Victoria for Ashley Abbott. Soon after, Victoria discovered that she was pregnant with Cole's baby. Neil Winters (Kristoff St. John)was the first person to whom Victoria confessed that she was pregnant. Victoria and Neil became engaged and planned to raise her child together. They broke off the engagement when Victoria's child, a girl that they named Eve after Cole's mother, died shortly after birth. They remained friends.
Victoria later developed an attraction to Gary Dawson (Ricky Paull Goldin), a shy marketing expert, who turned out to be a stalker whose bedroom walls were plastered with her photos, including a nude centerfold that she had posed for years ago. Victoria discovered the disturbing collage on his wall. She was kidnapped by Gary and held hostage in the long-abandoned Newman treehouse. Her brother, Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) and Paul Williams (Doug Davidson) rescued her, and Gary was confined to a mental institution. Later, Victoria and Ryan fell in love again and planned to re-marry. Neil Winters, Victoria's one-time love interest, was Ryan's best man. On the day of the wedding, Ryan's psychotic ex-wife, Tricia Dennison McNeil (Sabryn Genet), kidnapped Victoria and tied her up. She arrived at the ceremony dressed in a wedding gown, identical to Victoria's, begging Ryan for a second chance. Victor rescued Victoria, but when she arrived at the chapel, Tricia produced a handgun and fired a shot at her. Ryan jumped in front of Victoria and took the bullet, saving Victoria's life, but he eventually died from the injury, leaving Victoria devastated and alone.
In 2002, Victoria feigned an interest in ranch hand, Diego Guittierez (Diego Serrano, later played by Greg Vaughan), in order to find out whether or not he had been sleeping with her brother Nick's wife, Sharon Newman (Sharon Case). She eventually developed feelings for him, and they began a relationship. Victor, having found out that Diego had slept with Sharon, paid him to leave town, infuriating Victoria. When Diego was beaten up by two thugs, who also took the $100,000 given to him by Victor, Victoria tracked him down at the hospital and they reunited. Diego became consumed with revenge against the thugs who beat him up. Victoria did not like this new vengeful side to Diego, so she ended the relationship. Victoria and Michael Baldwin (Christian LeBlanc) grew close in 2003. They fell in love, but Victoria left Michael and Genoa City in December 2003, when family problems became too much for her to handle.
Victoria was not seen or heard from until she returned to town in March 2005. She arrived at Michael's doorstep, expecting to pick up where they left off. Michael informed her that he got married to Lauren Fenmore while she was away, and Victoria bowed out gracefully.
Victoria then started dating Brad Carlton in 2005. They married in April 2006. She became pregnant with his child, but she lost the baby shortly thereafter. Victoria discovered that Brad had a one-night stand with Sharon shortly after they got married. Victoria and Brad consequently divorced. Victoria turned to J.T. Hellstrom whenever there was a problem in her relationship with Brad. The pair shared two one-night stands, the first in early 2006, before her marriage to Brad, and the second in April 2007. Victoria became pregnant with a son shortly after deciding to divorce Brad, and she was unsure of the paternity of the child. The father could have been Brad or J.T.
Victoria and J.T. became engaged in October 2007. Days later, a pregnant Victoria was left comatose after being hit by a falling piece of rock during the Clear Springs explosion. Her baby was delivered prematurely via C-section. Victoria was cared for at the Newman Ranch. After a long wait and a few arguments between Brad and J.T., it was announced that J.T. was the father of Victoria's baby. While Victoria was still comatose, J.T. named the baby boy Reed Hellstrom after Victoria's mother, Nikki's, maiden name, and because a reed is strong and bends with the wind. J.T. brought the baby home to Victoria, and she awoke from her coma. Victoria and J.T. married in February 2008. Their marriage faced a rough patch when J.T. kissed Colleen Carlton, and Victoria slept with Deacon Sharpe. After Colleen's death, the two reconciled, and amid scandal, Victoria quit her job at Newman Enterprises due to the article that Billy Abbott published about her affair with Deacon. She then believed that she needed a break, so she went to Dubai, leaving J.T. and Reed in Genoa City. While she was away, J.T. grew close to Mackenzie Browning, a woman he dated a few years back. When Victoria came home, she grew close to Billy Abbott. She and J.T. ultimately divorced and moved on with Mac and Billy respectively. Then, Victoria was named CEO of Jabot Cosmetics by her father. Still, after Victoria was told that Adam Newman helped Victor to win Jabot in the bids, she refused the offer, much to Victor's dismay.
Victoria and Billy Abbott began a tumultuous romance that they attempted to keep hidden, however it was eventually exposed by Deacon Sharpe. When Victoria failed to be at a custody hearing for her son, the judge ruled that her soon-to-be-ex-husband, J.T. would gain full custody of Reed. Victoria was a suspect for the murder of Adam Newman (however he faked his death, and was actually alive) and was arrested, Billy bailed her out. Billy ended up convincing a depressed Victoria to hop on a plane to Jamaica with him. After a night of heavy drinking, the two got married. The next morning, they woke up and remembered what happened. They returned home and Victor was extremely disgusted with Victoria's involvement with billy, and the marriage was eventually declared invalid. Despite this, they continued to see each other and dated, with Victoria quitting her job at Newman Enterprises. Billy and Victoria bought a house together and learned that Victoria was pregnant. They were officially married, and Victor was extremely unhappy. After they were declared man and wife, Victor's people came and arrested Victoria (in order to stop the wedding) for bribing a foreign official. Victor later took blame for this, freeing Victoria. She lost the child while arguing with Victor, enraging Billy, pitting the Newmans against the Abbotts.
Victoria could not forgive her father for causing her miscarriage and, along with her half-sister, Abby Newman, she declared war on Victor via a lawsuit. With the advice of his ex-wife, Nikki Newman, Victor offered Abby and Victoria a settlement worth three billion dollars. Victoria refused it and talked Abby into doing the same; instead, they offered Victor a deal: they would call off the suit if Victor gave them Beauty of Nature, his most valued Cosmetics Line. He refused, and the lawsuit escalated. Billy left Genoa City with Reed and his new wife Mackenzie Browning, were moving to Washington, D.C. Victoria was devastated, and she and Billy decided to have children, but it was also revealed that she was unable to have children. Victoria became depressed, so Billy brought her a newborn baby girl that he adopted for them. In reality, Billy bought the baby girl for $2 million from Primrose Deville from a market adoption ring. Victoria instantly fell in love with the baby, and they named the baby Lucy Abbott after the character from I Love Lucy, as it looked as though she would have bright red hair.
Around the same time as the "death" of Sharon Newman, Daniel Romalotti revealed to Billy that he was the biological father of Lucy. His mother Phyllis Summers forbid him to give over his parental rights to Victoria and Billy, despite him wanting his daughter with the two of them. They compromised rights over Lucy, however the baby was taken away from them after the truth about her being illegally adopted came out. Victoria kicked out Billy, furious. Victor and Billy lost custody of Lucy to Daniel, however once he was certain that the baby was his, he moved in with them. Phyllis, angry about these events was fired by Billy from Restless Style. Victor was given a job offer by Katherine Chancellor, despite Billy wanting her to give up the offer to spend time with Lucy, she remained taken by opportunity, angering Billy, who was fully focused on raising Lucy. Once Daisy Carter's maternal rights were terminated being terminated by a judge, Phyllis and Daisy arrived to reinstate them. The possible adoption was overturned. Phyllis eventually won custody of Lucy, making things between Victoria and Billy worse. Billy left and moved back into his trailer. They officially split once she found Billy with a near-naked women, and accepted a role at Newman Enterprises. Billy began to drink and fall back into his old patterns. Billy ended up in a car accident, but survived. Victoria, despite wanting to help him, didn't act on it and left him in the hospital. She shifted herself fully back to her old self, and business. Billy was arrested for nearly starting a fatal fist fight with Victor. Later, Victoria was one of many who was sent a text by Diane Jenkins to meet her at the footbridge in the park. After Diane's body was found floating in the water, Victoria was next seen at the Police Station, where she bailed Billy out of jail. Victoria (to the viewers) was considered a suspect for Diane's murder. Despite helping him, she told him that they would both part ways.
Billy and Victoria met up again when he was at the house collecting belongings, and they continued to make love, however Billy left her straight after; breaking her heart. Billy went back to Hong Kong. Victor became saddened, however Sam Gibson, Sharon Newman's lover from New Mexico, stayed with her while in Genoa City helping Sharon through her trial, and lifted her spirits. Later Delia Abbott, Billy's daughter, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and needed a bone marrow transplant. Victoria tried to bring Billy home, however failed. During this time, Billy was locked up somewhere. However, without anybody's knowledge Victor released him on the grounds of him never seeing Victoria, and he could give Delia is liver (and make it seem like Kevin Fisher was the person saving Delia's life). Billy painfully agreed, and lived in a trailer for months without showing himself to anybody, and eventually left. Victoria decided to consider a divorce, but couldn't bring herself to it. After these events, Billy went to Myanmar.
Victoria later set out to find Billy, enlisting the help of his mother Jill. They traveled to Myanmar, and were led to believe that Billy was dead. They were almost killed by the same man who framed Billy for drug trafficking. Cane saved them and they returned home, however Victoria went to New York City (due to limited Plane Seats) and saw Billy there, the two were reunited. She was both angry and happy, however ultimately felt betrayed and angry for not contacting his wife. When Victoria tried to leave, she couldn't get a flight and the two ended up staying at an adjoining hotel suite. They made love, and once Victoria learned the truth about Victor's part in Billy's staying away from Delia, and she vowed to cut Victor out of her life. They returned to Genoa City, and Victoria refused to know the details of Myanmar; as Billy had sex with another women. They officially reunited in public as a couple at Thanksgiving, and remain strong as a couple.
However, Billy's love affair from Myanmar, Chelsea Lawson arrived in Genoa City, claiming to be pregnant with Billy's child.
